Interview conducted at Wakestock '05 by ontarioscene.com - Nick Barfoot and Rachel Cannatelli (photographer). Enjoy!
So for people arent familiar with you guys, how would you describe your sound?
(sarcastically - your favorite question right?)
(To Adam) Go for it buddy.
I dont know, its sounds like.............. fun, and rockin.
Now, I understand you guys just finished a video, tell us about it.
Yah, we did a video in April, we did it at a five pin bowling alley in Toronto, with Marc Ricciardelli and it features us and Choke and Ghosts of Modern Man and Moneen, and we have a bowling match, and we win because....
Cause its our video.
I mean you guys have to win; its your video right?
Yeah, and I shoot the winning shot.
(chuckles) and how was that decided?
Uh, I dont know, I just kinda got up there and shot.
Mark kinda came up with everything.
Yeah.
So, you guys have opened for bands such as Matchbook Romance, Silverstein and Smallman Records bands, are we going to be seeing a headlining tour anytime soon?
The next time we do some sort of a headlining tour will probably be when our new record comes out, which probably wont be until the Spring. Like were touring in the fall with Strung Out. So we'll probably do a headlining tour next summer.
And I understand you guys are taking some time off this summer to work on the record?
Yeah, we got a cottage were going to go up to, and write some of the record there, and it should be really cool, imp really stoked.
And that will be out on Smallman again?
Yep, Smallman, probably in the spring.
So what can people expect, coming from the demo, to Ravenna to the new stuff?
Its way different. Well, not way way different, but theres a lot of different influences. And uh, its a lot less punk.
yeah, that sounds right.
So with Ravenna, there seems to be a storyline to the album. Do you want to tell us about it?
Ravenna is kinda like a story of just, when we were writing it, we had gone through a lot of changes, and we had never been on a label before, and we gotten a lot of help and support, and we were all really stoked on it, and a lot of the lyrics and stuff on Ravenna came out really positive. And its just about seeing something you want and going for it, and just getting it, and just being happy with whats going on, and comfortable in your situation.
So how does it differ from your EP?
The EP focused on, it was called Problems Associated with Running, and a lot of that was written when we were still in our old band. and a lot of our stuff then was, we werent really liking the music we were playing anymore, and the direction we were going and we just wanted to slow down. And a lot of things were happening in a lot of our friends lives, and our lives, and we just kind of, wanted to chill out and write music that we wanted to play, and thats how the reason came to be. It was just written out of a lot of feelings and emotions that happened at the end of the old band.
That comes across when you guys play the new stuff, cause I had seen you guys play before Ravenna, and that really comes off, that you feel comfortable playing on stage.
Sweet thanks a lot man.
Red skies at dawn seems drastically different from the rest of the songs on the record. How did that all happen?
I had heard that in another interveiw you guys mentioned it was about someone who kinda thought the world owed everything to him. Do you guys care to share who that is or?
Nah, id rather not, it was a really personal song with everybody, and it was just written kinda metaphorically. Ive always wanted to do something like taking a theme or an idea and basing real life stuff, back then it was a pirate themed thing, the music to it we kinda threw it together.
Yeah, it was fun for us to play, and it might not match the rest of the songs on the record to a tee, but I mean we wanted to play it, like its sorta for us sorta thing I guess.
A lot of your lyrics have a story to them, are they real life or are they fictional?
No, they're always real life. Its hard to write fictional stuff. I dont know, I usually just take a situation, and find some other situation thats like it, and metaphorically, like a lot of stuff I'm writing for the new record has to do with a lot of personal shit but put out into make a story kinda thing as well.
With the new record, do you think your sound has evolved, and if so, how?
Well yeah, we listen to a lot of different types of music and as time goes on we start listening to different things and grabbing different influences, so I think the newer stuff were writing is picking up more of what were into now. Were definitely together as a group, like its evolved that way but, I wouldnt say its evolved so much as its just were playing what were into, if that makes any sense at all?
Were just not worried about fitting into any genre right now, were just kind of writing a really good record, and trying to write really good songs that were happy playing and that we feel the beats of and stuff like that. Just revolving around a lot different beats.
Whos Sarah? You mention her in Subways in Pittsburgh?
Ohhh thats Sarah, shes a good friend, she plays in a band Tegan and Sarah, and shes good friend of ours, a friend of mine for a while. Go to her for advice sometimes, because shes been through a lot of shit with her band so, whenever something happens I always call her up and see how to handle it, im really tight with them. I want to get her to sing on our next record, that would be really cool but, I havent asked her yet. (chuckles)
So whos the better wake boarder here?
Cameron. Probably Cameron.
I havent even really tried wakeboarding, ive tried it once or twice. It was fun, its just , I suck but. If me and Adam - If there was a reason wakestock, id probably win.
If there was a reason wakestock, id be working at the pizza pizza booth. Making pizzas.
Those who know you guys, they really love you. Why do you think that is?
Were just like, I dont know were genuine dudes, like we dont try and put on a show, like everything you see is just us rocking out having a good time, and we try and meet as many people as possible and reach out, and I dont know, talk to bands and stuff like that and I like to consider everyone who watches us and gets stoked on our shit, like our friends, so its like a bunch of friends coming to see you. We wanna know as many people as possible, and were just really personal. (turns to Cameron)
That was good.
(moving to random questions)
So whats your favorite type of tree?
Tree?
Tree!
Well im a big fan of willow trees. I like the way they droop. Their branches make really good marshmallow roasting sticks. And uh yeah, thats about it.
So tell us your favorite story from the Smallman Tour.
Oh man, theres a lot of good stories from that tour.
How about the April fools joke?
Yeah, we played an April fools joke on Smallman, that we all got in a huge fight with GOMM, and Cam and Jer left the tour and were on a bus back home, and that we were thinking about doing the rest of the tour with me playing guitar, and the guy from GOMM playing drums, and there was a big thing that went on for the whole morning,
And we got our manager in it,
And everyone was like the Reason got in a huge fight, shits going down. And they were shitting their pants. And then, right at noon, Cam called and blah blah blah, and was like I got something to say, and puts the phone out, and everybodys just like April fools. And, theyre going to get us back.
Yeah. They are. Were waiting for it.
(laughs) Yeah, you better look out for next year.
Yeah, we'll be prepared.
They'll probably do it on a random day.
Yeah, they'll say its the second April fools or something.
Yeah, thats what it was like when they told us about the Strung Out tour, I was like your. fucking. joking. man. Cause we just thought we were gonna go on a headlining tour, and we were trying to get on these tours and nothing was really going on, and were just like alright we'll just do a headlining tour, it will be fun, what ever,
So when is that show, so people know?
The 28th of September, is the Toronto show, at the Pheonix.
Awesome.
And is that 19+?
No, no its all ages.
So whats your favorite type of dinosaur?
Triceratops. I gotta thing with groups of three.
Im probably a fan of the uh... does the woolly mammoth count?
Yup.
Yep. Anything counts in this interview.
Wolly Mammoth, or a brontosaurus. 'Go with the classics.
And finally, are any of you guys going to visit you know, the clothing optional beach? And if you are, around what time?
The what?
(Adam and Cameron confused for a second)
The clothing optional beach?
well whats that?
OHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, like the nudity beach!
(laughs) Yeah.
I dont even know where that is. Where is it?
Yeah, I didnt even know there was one until like now.
Yeah, I dont know, I leave my personal stuff for those who.... deserve it.
Im in a really bushy stage right now.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Id be unattractive to others.
Ill go there with like a hoodie and jeans.
Yeah, im not gonna get naked.
We'd go, but wed take the option of clothes, probably right now.
Yeah, we d go with clothes and kinda look at everyone else probably.
Well I guess thats it. It was nice talking with you guys!
Thanks!
Cool, thanks.
